The Harvey Girls
Year: 1946
Directed by: George Sidney & Robert Alton
Starring: Judy Garland, John Hodiak, Ray Bolger, Angela Lansbury, Virginia O’Brien
I’m not a big fan of this type of MGM movie musical (technicolor extravaganza that’s an excuse to sing and dance); however, when it features peak Judy Garland belting out a classic like “On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe” in, yes, gorgeous technicolor and wonderful choreography, together with the glorious Angela Lansbury being bitchy, underappreciated John Hodiak, a little history lesson about Harvey Girls and American trains and hospitality, I eat it up. I do have one big complaint: why is Judy’s dress in the big musical number such a drab color?!
